A particularly charming rendering if Victory
Lot 2921
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 20 mm, 3.42 g, 5 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Treveri. Irregular mint, after 324. CONSTΛNTINVS ΛVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. SΛRMΛTIΛ OEVICTΛ / STR(crescent) Victory advancing right, holding trophy in her right hand and palm frond in her left, spurning captive seated to right. Cf. RIC 435 (for prototype). A lovely piece with a particularly charming rendering if Victory, notably her wing. Slightly rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin's style clearly indicates it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It imitates Treveri 435, but Constantine's bust diverges from the usual portraits, and the depiction of Victory on the reverse is highly unconventional.
